Life changes in an instant for Mia Hall after a car accident puts her in a coma. We follow her through an out-of-body experience where she must decide whether or not she should wake up and live a life far different than she had imagined. If I Stay, is based on the best selling novel by Gayle Forman and stars Chloe Grace Moretz, Mireille Enos and Jamie Blackley.
If I Stay was a gentle film. It was slow, soft and gushy with information slowly painting a picture. It was over romantic at times however I felt Moretz did an awesome job of Mia leading me on her journey and almost bringing it back to earth.
If I Stay reminded me of The Lovely Bones and recently released The Fault in Our Stars. Like If I Stay both films feature themes of death and are based around a young female character. The Lovely Bones of course also featuring an experience where the story is told by the narrative of the female.
Overall the film was moving and there was a point in which I must admit to being teary eyed, so the story did manage to pull me in and engage me.
If you enjoyed The Lovely Bones or The Fault in Our Stars then this movie is for you.
In NZ Cinemas from August 28th, with a Mature (M) rating.
