SecondHand Purchases I've Made Recently
With a trip to Europe on the cards this summer, spending has been put on hold, a challenge because, well, summer in Europe itself brings new clothes 😂 Combine with me working out and changing a dress size, and it’s been a challenging time. I’ve written a list, and I’ve been on the hunt - It’s been pretty fun being on TradeMe and Designer Wardrobe almost nightly, searching for the perfect items. I have also been selling some things as I look to save some money. As it’s been a pretty good month, I wanted to share some of my top purchases recently.
Deadly Ponies - Poucheroo
Purchased at: Designer Wardrobe
RRP: 299NZD - I got it for $140
After writing my packing list, I decided I needed a bag for partying in Ibiza. My classic Saben was just a little too big for nightclub life, and all I needed was my phone and 1-2 cards. I looked up my faves Deadly Ponies, Saben, and Yu Mei, and the Deadly Ponies Poucheroo caught my eye. I was happy to pay the $299, but with Europe three months away, saving money was the goal I wanted to see if I could pick her up secondhand. I spent weeks looking for a black one, and one came up on Designer Wardrobe; within 4 hours of it being listed, I made an offer, and it was accepted and only used once and for less than half the retail price. I’m delighted with this purchase!
Ruby - Mirella T-Shirt Minidress
Purchased at: Designer Wardrobe
RRP: 229NZD - I got it for $140
I have wanted this dress forever, but of course, I didn’t buy it when it came out, and you snooze you loose with Ruby - it was gone. I have the entire length of this dress in red and get a lot of compliments, so when I spotted this number up for sale, I knew it was perfect. I negotiated for what felt like a week. The owner wanted $180 initially, and I just wasn’t prepared to pay that. Part of the thrill when shopping secondhand is the hunt, but I do love the negotiating on Designer Wardrobe.
Levi’s - Black Denim Jacket
Purchased at: Designer Wardrobe
RRP: 179NZD - I got it for $80
Okay, this one I’m not so proud of; I really should have just brought it new! But here is the thing. I had two denim jackets, one black from Glassons and one blue one which was too big - swimming on me. I sold both on Trademe and made a total of $120. I never wore the Glassons one as the denim felt cheap and nasty, and it just wasn’t me, but I also needed a black jacket back in my life because double denim wasn’t a vibe for me. I’m happy with my purchase, but for a second hand, I think I paid too much - I should have got this new one on sale ($115), BUT then again, she is pretty much further, and $80 is pretty dang good.
SENSO - Mille III Sandal
Purchased at: Designer Wardrobe
RRP: 239NZD - I got it for $50
Like the Deadly Ponies, this is an absolute win! These Sandals had only been worn once, and since I’ve owned them, I have worn them on five occasions. I have four pairs of Senso Heels made from leather; I know my size and see the quality. She wanted $80, but the result was $50! I am so happy with this buy! Yes, no box, but for these babies, no box is needed; they are Sandals, after all.
So that’s my haul!
What did I learn?
Always negotiate - Designer Wardrobe prices can be inflated but also down to the more extended listing periods and lack of auctions like Trademe. Anything can go at any time, BUT if you want something - don’t wait either. If it’s too good to be actual, stick to buy now, and don’t stress too much - Designer Wardrobe has buyer protection!
Sti k to places like Designer Wardrobe or Trademe. - Believe it or not, this Social Media Manager got scammed on Facebook Market Place recently and lost $158. So lay it bright, or if you are taking the risk on Facebook Marketplace - pick it up in person, and pay in cash.
When it comes to selling - watch the fees. I actually prefer to sell on Trademe as the success fees are lower than that on Designer Wardrobe but there are pros and cons to both!
Have fun!
I’m pretty proud of these purchases!
